Penned by a young Paul McCartney and given a Lennon/McCartney writing credit, "A World Without Love" was recorded by the English duo of Peter & Gordon and released as their first UK single in February of 1964. By April, it hit #1 and was subsequently released in the United States where, riding the wave of Beatlemania and the British Invasion, it topped the Billboard Hot 100 and Cash Box Top 100 charts in June and gave Peter & Gordon the distinction of becoming the first UK act after the Beatles to hit #1 in the US. In addition to becoming Peter & Gordon's biggest hit, it also gave Lennon & McCartney their biggest hit not released by the Beatles themselves. On Billboard's US charts for 12 weeks, "A World Without Love" finished the year in the #30 spot on the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1964 chart.
