After a nearly two-year run of hits, Rare Earth concluded with their last smash single, "Hey, Big Brother," which peaked at #22 or #19 (depending on the charts used) in January 1972. There would be one more major hit, "Warm Ride," six years later.
Many songs of late 1971 and early 1972, like "Peace Train" by Cat Stevens, "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" by both The Hillside Singers and The New Seekers, and "Imagine" and "Merry Xmas The War Is Over" by John Lennon, were promoting the peace movement, anticipating an end to the Vietnam War and a new age of harmony.
Rare Earth offered a more cynical vision of the near future and far future based on George Orwell's "1984" about the same time as Stanley Kubrick's dark futuristic masterpiece, "A Clockwork Orange," was released in theaters. The song skyrocketed on most AM radio playlists in large and major cities across the US and Canada, despite the national charts.
Here, then, is my video version of one of the many great songs of 1972 which I hope you will enjoy. It is never heard on oldies stations these days, which is truly a pity. It is a classic that deserves to be remembered.
