Frankie Vaughan was an English singer of traditional pop music in the UK who released more than 80 recordings in his lifetime. Born Frank Abelson, the name 'Vaughan' came from a grandmother who used to call Frank "my number one grandson". In his grandmothers Russian accent one sounded like Vaughan, which he adopted as his stage name. In 1955 he recorded what was to become his trademark song, "Give Me The Moonlight, Give Me The Girl". He became known as "Mr. Moonlight" after this became his first big hit. He recorded a large number of covers of US hit songs including "Kisses Sweeter than Wine" and "Come Softly to Me". In early 1957 his cover of Jim Lowes "The Green Door" reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart. In 1961 Vaughan hit #1 again in the UK with his cover of Gene McDaniels "Tower of Strength". This selection was released in 1957, spent four weeks at #1 in the UK and received heavy play on US jukeboxes.
